Scaling laws of the four environmental torques#
When a spacecraft shrinks by a linear factor at constant bulk density (), the four environmental torques scale at different powers of [1]:
- Gravity-gradient torque (): . Because principal moments of inertia scale as , halving the edge from () to () reduces by a factor of [2].
- Aerodynamic torque (): . Cross-section and centre-of-pressure offset yield scaling—unless a deployed UHF tape antenna ( at ) introduces an unscaled lever arm[3].
- Solar radiation pressure torque (): , which sits near for a cube.
- Residual magnetic torque ( to ): . Current loops on solar panels, nickel-plated battery cans and steel fasteners produce almost regardless of hull size[4].

Design consequences for 1P attitude control#
Above , a parasitic dipole of generates in the polar geomagnetic field—two orders of magnitude larger than gravity-gradient torque () and an order of magnitude above aerodynamic torque at moderate solar activity. Routing solar-string return paths directly beneath cell interconnects (back-wiring) and replacing nickel-plated steel fasteners with titanium or A4-80 stainless steel are mandatory before sizing or magnets[3].
